Information And Historical Facts About Munich

Munich is the capital of Bavaria, Germany and was founded in 1158 by Henry the Lion, duke of Saxony and of Bavaria which is situated in the Southern part of Germany. Munich derives it name from the medieval Munichen or Monks.

Munich prospered as the salt trading center but it was hard hit by the epidemic of plague in 1349. The city got rid of this disastrous epidemic only after 150 years. By 19th century, the Munich’s architecture and Italianate was boosted by the monument buildings and constructions.

In 1504, Munich become the capital of Bavaria and emerged as a major city with an archbishop, a university, an opera house, palaces by the mid of Nineteenth century. The Bavarian Prince Ludwig I, launched a building programs which change the capital into a cultural and artistic centre. During World War I, Munich turned into the hotbed of postwar political turmoil and economic disasters. It turned into the most favorable site for Adolf Hitler’s National Socialist Movement.

The population of Munich is around 1,300,000 which and it has covered an area of 310 square kilometers. The currency of the Germany is Euro and many of the shops and restaurants do not accept the credit cards so proper attention should be paid towards this.
